Group Viewing of The Karate Kid

When:  Saturday, June 26, 2010 (Essays due by Tuesday, June 22)
Where:  TBD

As you've probably seen on television, a remake to the original Karate Kid (released in 1984) is entering the theaters on June 11, 2010.  The original and its sequels encouraged thousands of people to try the martial arts for themselves, and is still referenced in popular literature as an excellent representation of the arts.  In this remake, the character is taught Wudang Kung Fu as a means of self defense (trailer below.)

As with most appropriately rated martial arts movies, I like to organize a class outing to enjoy these types of events.  I also wanted to offer a way for students to earn their ticket fees, if interested

Below are two scenes from the original Karate Kid, which were selected due to their importance and difficulty in understanding.  One scene was selected for the Beginner class, and another, more difficult one for the Advanced class.

Your assignment, if you are interested in earning your ticket, is to view the suggested scene portion.  After viewing, discuss in the appropriate amount of words what is going on, and your thoughts.

If you cannot view these videos, please let Master Koons know so that he can allow you to complete this assignment.

Beginner Class Assignment

In this scene from the 1984 version of The Karate Kid, the student ,Daniel, and his prospective teacher, Mr. Miyagi, visit the karate school that his bullies are taught at.

Watch this scene from the beginning to 3:30.  The teacher of the bullying children, dressed in black, talks to his students about their training, and how it should be used. Listen carefully to this, and how he treats Daniel and Mr. Miyagi.

Your response should be no less than 200 words to earn a movie ticket.

Questions to address:

What do you think about what the instructor in black says to his students, and how he treats people?  Is this right for an instructor to do?  Is this how instructors should gain respect?

Do you agree that "if a man confronts you on the street, in competition, that they are the enemy", and that "the enemy deserves no mercy"?  Explain your answers.

Is this different from what you learn here in taekwondo class?  If so, how?

Advanced Class Assignment

In this scene from the 1984 version of The Karate Kid, the student, Daniel, and his teacher, Mr. Miyagi, are together outdoors.  Daniel is "karate training" as Mr. Miyagi fishes.

Watch this scene from 7:40 - 9:57.  In it, Mr. Miyagi is teaching Daniel a skill I also like to drill, which is balance.  Daniel, being a typical student, is bored by this and is only interested in when he will begin learning to punch.

Daniel them asks Mr. Miyagi if he has ever been in a fight, and more interestingly, tells Mr. Miyagi why he thinks his teacher trains in karate.  Listen very carefully to what Mr. Miyagi says when told this.

Your response should be no less than 400 words to earn a movie ticket.

Questions to address:

Do you think that students should only "train to fight" in the martial arts?  Explain why or why not.

Do you think that everyone, even teachers, are afraid at the idea of fighting, like Mr. Miyagi?  Why would karate students be afraid to fight, even after all the training they have had?

What do think that the statement "train so that you don't have to fight" means?
