General Information
Traditional Korean martial arts are now being offered at York YWCA!
Practicing
the art of Taekwondo delivers a variety of benefits. In addition to learning self-defense
techniques and committing to regular exercise, students acquire increased focus
and discipline, and respect for others.
If you or your children would like to begin training in Taekwondo at the YWCA, we
invite you to visit our Saturday classes. For
the Taekwondo novice to the advanced student, we hold classes suited to
all skill levels, ranks, and ages. For new students, we offer a free uniform with enrollment.
Class Structure
Three
main elements of Korean martial arts are taught in classes: self-defense,
sparring, and forms.
Hapkido, or unarmed self-defense,
includes practical techniques that can force an armed or unarmed attacker into
submission, or allow for escape.
Practice increases in difficulty as students advance in training, when
joint locks, throws, and striking techniques are applied. Through repetitive practice, students produce
fluid techniques automatically.
Gyroogi, or sparring, includes a variety of kicking
techniques and blocks, comprising the sport aspects of modern, competitive
martial arts. This Taekwondo skill is
currently a medal event during the Summer Olympic Games.
Poomse, or forms, are self-defense patterns that include kicks, strikes, blocks, and
postures. Patterns increase in
difficulty as students advance in training.
Through repetitive practice, students learn traditional technique
combinations, while improving balance and motor control.
